Accutane Skin Saviours

I’ve only been on Accutane for three weeks, and already I am starting to see the side effects on my skin. Nothing major so far, mostly dry skin and lips – it’s actually been quite nice to have my makeup last all day without slipping off. From the day I started my treatment I knew that I needed to up my skincare game and so far I’ve kept a routine, making sure I cleanse and moisturise twice a day to keep my skin hydrated.

I’ve found already that I’ve had to change the types of products I use, both make up and skincare. Where I used to go for bases and creams designed for ‘oily’ skin, I’ve now switched to lighter coverage foundation and ‘combination’ cleansers.

Here are some of my skin savours from my first month of being on Accutane:

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream

At night, the Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream works wonders when it comes to keeping my lips soft – so I make sure I slather it on just before going to bed. I was given a few samples of this cream at an event a while back, and it’s been sitting in a drawer ever since – I wish I had discovered it sooner – because this stuff is amazing! It has a very thick consistency and quite a strong smell (think Carmex) which is why I tend to use it at night. But it certainly does the job and I wake up every morning with soft chap-free lips. The Eight Hour Cream is really versatile and can be used anywhere where you have dry patches. I have a feeling I’ll be getting through tubes of this in the next six months.

Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base

I bought this cream before my treatment as I was getting dry patches on my face in the colder weather and this was recommended by a friend. Now that my dry patches have turned into…well…a dry face, this moisturiser/primer has its work cut out. Like the Eight Hour Cream, it’s quite rich, which makes it a great base in the mornings. It also has a heavenly lemon scent, perfect for waking my skin up. I love it, it does exactly what it says on the tin – the only downside is that you don’t get a lot of product for the price.

Jurlique Herbal Recovery Night Cream

Jurlique has been a staple in my skincare collection for as long as I can remember – and their night cream is great for adding a little bit of luxury to your evening routine. The moisturiser is nice and light – I start by warming it in my palms first and then massage it into my face and neck. It’s usually the last thing I do before I get into bed and it’s non-greasy texture means it doesn’t get on the bed sheets.

Green & Spring Intensive Hand Cream

Oh em gee, this stuff smells incredible! Like a spa in a bottle, the Green & Springs hand cream travels everywhere with me now. As soon as I get this out of my bag, there’s guaranteed to be somebody nearby who makes a comment about how great it smells. I’ve noticed the palms of my hands becoming dry since I’ve been on Accutane, so I make sure this product is at my fingertips at all times. As for the scent…a blend of sage, lavender and chamomile…you are going to have to trust me (or buy yourself a tube!)

So there we go…the first products helping me through the first stage of my Accutane journey. Do you have any recommendations on brands for dry skin? Let me know in the comments.
